Discernment

A free reading of Luča mikrokozma

Petar II Petrović Njegoš wrote Luča mikrokozma, a poem whose title evokes a ray of the microcosm. This is a free reading of its motifs, not a translation of the poem.

This is not a story about what Njegoš knew.

This is an attempt to discern what he saw — and to ask whether a trace of it exists in us too.

For Luča is not knowledge that one person possesses. It is the light by which a person, if only for a moment, recognizes themselves.

The Prison

We do not begin with heaven. We begin with the prison.

With the feeling that the space we live in does not match the breadth we sense within ourselves. The prison is therefore not only a place. It can be a habit, a fear, someone else's name for our life, or a thought we have repeated for so long that we have forgotten it was never ours.

At first, a person does not see the bars. They only feel that there is not enough air.

This is not proof that another world exists. It is the first diagnosis:

this is not all there is.

The Trace

When a person recognizes this, they still have no path. They have only a trace.

A trace is not a map, and it promises no certainty. Sometimes it is a barely noticeable difference between what draws us together and what scatters us. Between a voice that frightens us and a silence in which we can hear ourselves again.

There is no need to see the whole path at once.

It is enough to discern the next step that does not lead deeper into the prison.

Forgetting

Darkness is not the greatest enemy of light.

Darkness can be seen. Forgetting cannot, because in it a person forgets even that they have forgotten something.

Then they call the prison the world, the burden fate, and their distance from themselves a normal life. They suffer not only because they have lost the path, but because they no longer remember that a path ever existed.

But forgetting is never complete.

If it were, we would not feel that something is missing.

The Spark

Something remains in a person that does not yield to complete forgetting.

It need not be large. It need not shine. Most often it appears as unease in the face of a lie, relief in the face of truth, or a quiet refusal to become someone who hurts others.

That is the spark.

It does not tell us we are chosen. It reminds us that we are not yet lost.

Luča is not a medal reserved for saints or a privilege of poets. It is a person's ability to tell, in the dark, what leads toward life from what extinguishes it.

The Fall

The fall is not only an event in some ancient cosmos.

It happens again whenever we forget relation and declare ourselves the only source. Whenever we want freedom without responsibility, power without connection, and a world that exists only for us.

We do not fall because we want to grow.

We fall when we believe we can grow apart from everything that carries us.

Then we do not become a source. We become a shadow that has forgotten the light from which it came.

The Threshold

Every return has a threshold.

There is no riddle there that only scholars can solve. There are simple questions we can no longer avoid:

Who am I when I set aside the names others have given me?

Where does the part of me that refuses darkness come from?

Where am I going if I continue on this path?

We do not cross the threshold by giving the correct answer.

We cross it when we stop answering in someone else's voice.

Remembering

Remembering here is not a return of data from the past.

It is a return to measure.

A person remembers what matters to them, where their responsibility lies, and what they must not sacrifice for the appearance of safety. The world stays the same, but they no longer see it with the same eyes.

They do not gain all knowledge.

They regain their bearings.

And sometimes that is enough for the path to appear again.

The Return

The aim is not to remain in the light and escape the world.

If what we have understood takes us away from people, makes us colder, or leads us to think we are above others, we have only built a new prison — this time from our own conviction.

The return is the true test of Luča.

To return to people without contempt. To see those who have forgotten without declaring them enemies. To keep the spark without needing to blind others with it.

We do not bring light as proof that we have been above.

We bring it as a hand held out to someone still looking for a way out.

Do Not Forget

In the end, no great secret remains.

Only a simple task:

do not forget.

Do not forget that the prison is not the whole world.

Do not forget that a trace need not be large to be true.

Do not forget that the spark is not only in poets, prophets, or saints.

Njegoš did not stand above people, pointing to an unreachable heaven. He looked at a person and saw a small cosmos within them — a being who can fall, forget, remember, and return.

So this is not an attempt to find out what Njegoš knew.

It is an invitation to discern what he saw.

Luča is not behind his words.

Luča is what in us still recognizes them.
